Sometimes, it’s good practice to just start recording a song without having anything in mind; no chords, no words, no concept. Such was the case with In the Background. We ran nonsensical phrases through the vocoder, looped it, and just built from those melodies until the final product poured from the pitcher like a fine malted chocolate milkshake. The proverbial cherry on top was BG channeling George Harrison and throwing down one of the thickest solos of 2011.
